Starting out as a virtual assistant can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re staring at an empty client list and wondering how to actually land your first paying client. I’ve been there. And I know firsthand that once you figure out how to find clients, everything else gets a lot easier.

In this post, I’m walking you through real, practical strategies that helped me and countless others start and grow a VA business from scratch. Whether you're brand new or just want to take your client list to the next level, these tips will help you confidently find and book aligned clients who value your work.

1. Clarify Your Services and Ideal Client

Before you start pitching or posting on social media, take time to define two things:

  • What services do you offer? Start with what you're great at—admin support, social media, inbox management, content repurposing, Pinterest, etc. You don’t need to do everything.

  • Who is your dream client? Think about the kind of business owner you love helping—coaches, bloggers, content creators, health professionals, etc.

🎯 Tip: The more specific you are, the easier it will be for people to see if you're the right fit for them.

2. Leverage Your Existing Network

Your first client might be closer than you think.

Let friends and family know what you’re offering. Share a post on your personal social media page. Reach out to anyone you’ve worked with before (even in different industries) and ask if they know someone who might need support.

💬 Sample DM:

“Hey! I just launched my virtual assistant business and I’m offering [insert services]. If you know anyone who might need help with [specific task], I’d love it if you kept me in mind or passed along my info!”

3. Utilize Facebook Groups

Facebook groups for female entrepreneurs, small business owners, and VAs are absolute goldmines. Look for groups where people frequently post job opps or ask for referrals.

📌 Pro Tip: Don’t just drop your services—engage! Offer helpful advice, answer questions, and build real relationships.

Some helpful search terms:

  • “Virtual Assistant jobs”

  • “Online business support”

  • “Female entrepreneurs support group”

4. Create a Simple Portfolio or Website

You don’t need a fancy website, but having something to show people makes you look way more legit.

Tools to try:

  • Canva for a quick PDF portfolio

  • Milkshake or Carrd for free landing pages

  • Squarespace if you’re ready to invest in a real site

5. Cold Pitch Strategically

Cold pitching can absolutely work—if you do it the right way. This is honestly how I have landed most of my clients!

Steps:

  • Research and make a list of potential businesses you'd love to support

  • Send personalized emails or DMs showing that you understand their business and how you can help. The more personalized, the better!!

📧 Sample Email:

Subject: Support for [Business Name]Hi [Name], I love what you’re doing with [specific thing you admire]. I’m a virtual assistant who specializes in [services], and I noticed [mention a gap you can help with].If you’re ever looking for support, I’d love to chat! Here’s my info and portfolio: [link]Warmly,[Your Name]

6. Promote Yourself on Social Media

Create a simple Instagram or TikTok account and post content that showcases your expertise. Talk about how you help clients, share behind the scenes, and offer quick tips.

Some content ideas:

  • Day in the life of a VA

  • Before/after inbox screenshots

  • “Things I do for my clients each week”

  • Tips for staying organized as a business owner

📲 Don’t forget to include your services and how to contact you in your bio!

  1. Ask for Referrals

Once you’ve worked with even one client—ask for a testimonial and let them know you’re accepting new clients. People love referring someone they trust!

🙌 You can also offer a small referral bonus (like $50 off services) to incentivize them.

You’ve Got This!

Finding clients as a virtual assistant doesn’t have to feel impossible. With a little strategy, a lot of persistence, and confidence in the value you bring, you will get booked. Start where you are, stay consistent, and be bold in sharing your services.

P.S. Are you looking for a private community created exclusively for Virtual Assistants who are serious about growing their business, building real momentum, and rising alongside other action-takers?! I've got just the thing for you! Come join the VA Sisterhood Society here!
